Are You Observing or Performing? Orientation, Media, and the Collapse of Speech
Are you observing or performing? The line that decides whether you can reorient.
I took a week to let the dust settle. It didn't, and it won't. The feed keeps looping. A man was assassinated on stage. Some treated it like a sport. People posted cheers on Instagram, then acted shocked when their boss called. Others joked on air, then raged when their networks suspended them. Free speech protects you from jail, not from judgment. Actions and posts carry costs.
The battlefield
We are disoriented. The medium is the message. We live inside the global village where gossip, shame, and ritual police the crowd. If you do not name that terrain, it owns you.
Boyd, correctly
Orientation is the living core. It shapes what we even see as real. It carries culture, experience, and scars. It implicitly guides and controls what we see. The OODA "loop" sketch is a useful abstraction of how cognition behaves under pressure. It is not steps. Treat it like steps and you hand your judgment to a template.
McLuhan, plainly
Change the form and you change the meaning. Live video makes you witness and producer. Short clips sell certainty by stripping context. Algorithms pay you in heat, not truth. Memes turn a life into a symbol market. That is the village at work.
The question
Are you observing or participating?
An observer can reorient.
A participant cannot.
Observers create space, cool the room, and ask what would change their mind. Participants ride the wave and mistake momentum for truth. If you blasted your cheer into the village, you performed. Performers rarely change their minds. They double down.
How to regain orientation
Guard inputs. List what you know versus what you only feel.
Name the medium you are in. Each form carries a bias.
Move to a cooler form when the heat cooks your brain. Long form. Voice. Room. Walk.
Ask the hard question. "What evidence would move me off my first reaction?"
Audit implicit guidance and control. Remove one source that leaves you angrier and dumber. Add one that makes you slower and more accurate.
We lead, we do not manage. Managers chase metrics. Leaders change the room.
Vocabulary slide to stop early
Criticism to Delegitimization to Dehumanization to Elimination.
When you hear people skip rungs, call it. Normalized in language, it becomes tempting in life.
Try this
Turn the mass audience back into a public.
For 24 hours, reply only with questions under hot threads. Report what changed.
Post two opposing clips of the exact moment. Explain the form tricks.
Unfollow one account you love that makes you less accurate. Check your judgment in a week.
Map where the celebration of the killing surfaced in your network and note the incentives.
The line
A strong culture broadens the scope for debate, allowing errors to be corrected through argument. A brittle culture narrows the lane and calls it safety. Celebrate a killing for an opinion, and you argue for rule by force. Demand protection from the same village you inflamed, and you are arguing for privilege without duty.
Before you log off, ask four things.
What medium makes me most accurate, not most loud?
What evidence would change my mind?
What room can I build where people can change their minds without losing their place in the tribe?
Am I observing or participating?
The dust will not settle.
Neither will we.
Orientation first.
Name the medium.
Guard the zone of speech.
Then lead.
